Jesus Took the Wheel I Took it Back!

Have you every prayed one of those bold faith filled prayers… and then… five minutes later you are stress – eating snacks, refreshing your bank app, and mentally planning 14 back up plans just in case God needs your help?
Yep, Me To!
We love the idea of Jesus taking the wheel until He actually starts driving somewhere we hadn’t planned on going. It’s not that we didn’t truly mean it at the time. We are in church, hands lifted, worship playing, feeling the Holy Spirit, and we surrender and confess; Jesus take the wheel!
In that very moment we are sincere and serious. We are like, “God, I trust you with my future, my finances, my relationships, my family… my everything.”
But what we don’t say out loud is, “as long as you head in the direction I have in mind.” Because often times when we surrender completely to God’s will we jump over into the passenger seat and the door we prayed that would open stays shut, the thing that we thought would work out doesn’t, the timeline we carefully planned… get’s completely ignored.
This is when we begin to question it all. Uh, Jesus… where are we going? And if we are honest, that’s when we slowly start reaching for the wheel again. Not in a dramatic way. Oh, No – we are subtle about it.
We start worrying again, we start trying to force the outcomes, we google ways to fix the circumstance we have gotten ourselves into. I trust you Lord, but allow me to offer my assistance!
Watch that turn, your going to fast, are you sure you this is the best route to take to get to where we are going. We become that person…
We are doing this to the Creator of the Universe. He literally spoke the world into existence and we are asking Him to consider our 3 step plan and back up spread sheet.
The truth of the matter is, we don’t grab the wheel because we are rebellious, we grab the wheel because we are nervous. We like control, we like knowing what’s next, we like feeling like we are doing something. But faith does not work that way. Faith says, “God I don’t understand this road but I trust the driver.”
I wonder what would happen in our lives if we would just stay in the passenger seat? We don’t have to pretend everything is easy peasy, we don’t have to pretend we are not nervous, but we have to choose to trust through all of that.
Even when the road is unfamiliar, the timing feels off, and the destination is not clear. Remember, Jesus isn’t a bad driver, he is not lost, and He never shows up late.
Next time you pray “Jesus, take the wheel” remember don’t grab it back at the first unexpected turn. Sit back – trust Him – and maybe just maybe… enjoy the ride a little bit.
Even if you do keep looking down at the GPS every 30 seconds.
